Perhaps it is necessary to define the word dhows, before describing the wooden sailing vessels which come into Dar es Salaam harbour. Dhow is the word commonly used by Europeans from the times of Burton and Stanley to refer to sailing craft of any size or shape seen in the Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf or Red Sea; and is usually used indiscriminately of fishing boats, out-rigger canoes, or large sailing ships from Arabia and India. It is commonly believed to mean Arabic word, but the Arabs themselves do not use it, and most deny all knowledge of it. Dickson, in The Arab of the Desert, says: “I’ve asked many Arabs what a dhow is, but none of them have ever heard of it at all. The Shaikh of Kuwait tells that in the old historical records he found the name dhow used once, when the Shaikh of the Bani Ka’ab invaded’ Kuwait by sea. The invading forces are said to have embarked in five great dhows. Apart from this the Shaikh knows of no mention of the name in Arab history. Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon Usambara Mountains a cool getaway in Tanzania

THE Usambaras, formed 25 million years ago and are considerably older than Mt Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru. They are divided into two ranges-East and West, (part of an ancient 25 million year old necklace of ranges called the Eastern Arc which includes the Taita Hills) -and are separated by the four km wide Lwengera Valley.

Both ranges are attractive and well worth as a visit although this article focuses on the West Usambaras. Visitors come to the Usambaras to enjoy nature , relax and hike.
