Goree Island
Just 4 kilometres off the coast of Dakar is Goree Island - strategically located and easily among the most captivating places in Senegal. Those advantages brought Goree years of turmoil as successive foreign powers tried to control it.
The locals called it “Ber” or “Bir” and it was also known as Beseguiche.
In 1444 Portuguese soldiers sent out under the orders of Denis Dias, a Portuguese navigator are said to have been the first foreigners to set foot on the island which they claimed and called “Palma”. Read the rest of this entry »
