South Africa has a coastline of 3000 km/1865 miles, which inevitably varies considerably over this great distance-in the nature of the coast, the temperature of the water and the number of visitors. On the west coast, which is washed by the cold Benguela Current, the water is never warmer than 170C/630F, but on the east coast the warm Aguelhas Current, coming from the Indian Ocean, provides much pleasanter conditions for bathers. Along the Garden Route the best time for bathing is from November to April. On the northern coast of KwaZulu Natal, with its beautiful, lonely beaches, the water is pleasantly warm up to 24 Celsius175 Farenheight throughout the year. The Wild Coast too has plenty of beautiful unfrequented beaches for sun-worshippers and bathers.
